The TRUTH About MEMORIAL Day...

As you may recall from my previous day post I knew very little about Memorial Day. Well after posting that, I found this info which I just had to 'Share'!!!

KNOW YOUR HISTORY: Memorial Day was started by former slaves on May, 1, 1865 in Charleston, SC to honor 257 dead Union Soldiers who had been buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp. They dug up the bodies and worked for 2 weeks ...to give them a proper burial as gratitude for fighting for their freedom. They then held a parade of 10,000 people led by 2,800 Black children where they marched, sang and celebrated.

Thanks to Abstrakt Goldsmith for this nugget of history that most of us never learned in school. When I say I'm a lifelong learner, believe me when I say I'm never to old to learn more of my history!

Happy MEMORIAL Day!

For many years I said Happy MEMORIAL Day! not having a clue what it meant. From a young age I associated MEMORIAL Day with the first cookout of the summer and a big sale. As I got older I believed MEMORIAL Day had something to do with remembering those that had served in the military that were now deceased. Well, I must have missed that lesson in civics or history class. As we see above MEMORIAL Day is about remembering those who died while actually serving. I wonder who else may have it confused with Veterans Day, like I did...

Get Ready for June 1, 2013!

Jump Start to 70!

What will you look like in your 70s? For those of you that have never seen this beautiful inspiration of a wife, mother, grandmother and World's Oldest Female Body Builder, let me introduce you to my "SHERO" Mrs. Ernestine Shepherd. She is an AMAZING woman that has been a major source of my inspiration since I learned of her in 2010. I haven't met her in person YET, but I feel like I know he personally from watching her interviews and reading about how she got started and all of her accomplishments. Learning that she didn't start exercising until she was 56 and that she didn't start body building until she was in her 70s has given so many of us who are over 50 a sense of hope and motivates us to get started NOW!

In the past seven years, I've learned that losing weight is not the same for everyone and doing it alone is even harder when you don't know what to do. The bottom line though, is that we all have to start somewhere. I'm not trying to compare myself to my "SHERO" but I have dropped OVER 60 lbs and I'm working on toning and tighten daily. I've tried a lot of things on the market and wasted a lot of time and money until I found what worked for me which was Hip Hop Abs. People ask me all the time how I did it and  how I stay motivated, so I thought I'd share what I did with everyone who wants to lose weight and even offer to do it with them. I've put together the "National Hip Hop Abs HEALTH & FITNESS Challenge!" If you or anyone you know are looking to lose weight and change their HEALTH just visit this link and CALL me (850) 702-4521 to get started. https://www.facebook.com/events/515664811802819/

And then write your own before and after story like Maria and I have done, along with paying it forward to help someone else. Share the HEALTH!

FITNESS For Families!

I have to say for the most part our family is for FITNESS! This is my oldest daughter of five children, her son and I getting ready for the big race! The reason I call it the 'BIG' Race is because it's my grandson's first time participating. He's been talking about it for months! My daughter and I have taken him out on practice runs to get him used to the distance. My son-in-law has taken my grandson to watch my daughter in races and all he talked about was running like mommy and getting a medal. We've got to prepare our children and grandchildren to live HEALTHIER lives. So today before the race my grandson asked my son-in-law (who wasn't able to run this morning due to an injury) if he could have a banana and granola bar, which my grandson has seen the volunteers pass out after all the races he's watched in the past. Instead of getting our "Feast On" we've got to show them how to Get Their "FIT On!" That's now the motto of this family... ~ Get Yo "FIT On!" ~ Get Yo "FIT On!" ~

American STROKE Month Continues...

Just checking to see if anyone out there has learned anything new about stroke? So many times we don't become involved or knowledgeable about a cause until it hits home. That's true for me as well. My mother had a heart attack and three weeks later had a stroke on the table while the doctors were checking the procedure from the heart attack, it wasn't enough for me to take interest in the cause just yet.

It wasn't until three years later and the month after my mother died from heart disease (serious of heart attacks) that my doctor told me I was at risk of the same thing... that I began to get involved with learning about stroke, heart disease and diabetes so that I could reduce my risk. Don't let it take the death of one of your love ones to learn the RISK!

Grandmothers of TODAY!

Grandmothers of today are very different from grandmothers of thirty plus years ago. Back then grandmothers wouldn't have thought twice about being an olympian, a marathoner or even exercising five or six time a week. Now grandmothers are paving the way for their children and grandchildren to experience HEALTHY and Fit lives through leading by example.

Today's grandmothers are focused on being HEALTHIER so that the can be around longer with their families. Grandmothers are exercising to reduce the need for lots of prescription drugs, risk of stroke, diabetes and heart disease. Now it's your turn, time to become a grandmother of this decade and change lives!

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Cinco de Mayo—or the fifth of May—commemorates the Mexican army's 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations. Cinco de Mayo traditions include parades, mariachi music performances and street festivals in cities and towns across Mexico and the United States.
